Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Feb. 22 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; two were younger than age 21.

Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Feb. 22 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; two were younger than age 21.

South Hilo officers arrested 10 drivers while Puna officers arrested six, Kona officers five and South Kohala officers four, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Ka’u officers arrested one driver.

So far this year, there have been 181 DUI arrests compared with 157 during the same period last year. There have been 207 major accidents so far this year compared with 231 during the same period last year.

So far this year, there have been two fatal crashes on Hawaii Island public roadways, resulting in two fatalities compared with two fatal crashes resulting in four fatalities during the same period last year.
